MEQUON POLICE DEPARTMENT MOTORCYCLE UNIT

Since 1998, the Mequon Police Department has utilized motorcycles as a valuable tool in policing our city.  During that time, our officers have saddled up on Harley Davidson motorcycles, particularly the Electra Glide Classic model, provided by Suburban Motors of Thiensville.  Originally, our department fielded two cycles but recently that has been reduced to one due to budget constraints.

Our police motorcycles have been used for a variety of duties and assignments.  Their primary function has been traffic enforcement and routine patrol, however, they have also served roles in traffic control, dignitary escorts, and parade duty.

Officers who wish to serve on the motorcycle unit must first attend and pass an Advanced Police Motorcycle Operator's course which in most cases is a 40 hour class.  The course is very intense and challenges officers to maneuver the cycle through difficult obstacle courses. Eight hour spring refresher courses are attended annually so officers stay current with their skills.  Although the motorcycle is mostly deployed during daylight hours, our department has several officers who work on other shifts who have successfully completed the requisite training.  Officer Steve Bzdusek is currently serving as the dayshift motorcycle officer.

Due to the motorcycle's maneuverability, which allows it to go where no squad can go, and its high visibility while on patrol, the motorcycle unit is a useful and necessary tool in achieving our goals of reducing crime and enhancing traffic safety in the City of Mequon.
