K-9 UNIT

The department’s K-9 Unit was approved by the city’s Common Council in November 2006.  By early May 2007, canine Vero had completed his training and was sworn in while standing by his officer handler, John Hoell.  The K-9 Unit (including all of its equipment, vehicle, training, veterinary care, and overtime) is 100 percent financed by private funds.

After twelve months of service, Vero and Officer Hoell had been deployed 200 times, which included drug sniffs, school searches, subject trackings, building searches, deterrent deployments, and public presentations.  Officer Hoell and Vero continue in their service to Mequon’s citizens and the police department by tracking and helping to find lost or missing children and special-needs adults, tracking and helping to find fleeing suspects, detecting drugs, recovering evidence for court trials, providing a highly-visible deterrent to criminal activity, providing officer protection, and providing public relations, especially building a rapport with children.  Vero is very popular and is a great public-relations tool for interacting with the community.
