SCHOOL LIAISON

The school liaison program is the result of the combined efforts of the police department and the school district to provide a program that serves to enrich relationships through education, communication, and understanding between the schools, police, youth, and the community.  This program was developed to decrease the number of crimes committed in schools or near school property.

The School Liaison Officer responds to issues at all of the area schools;conducts criminal investigations and public relations functions as they pertain to the juvenile population of the City of Mequon; patrols and supervises various school functions; creates and implements law-related educational curriculum; develops school security measures; investigates crimes related to juvenile perpetrators or victims; and provides educational presentations to juveniles, parents, school administrators, and the general public.

The responsibility of the School Liaison Officer varies and includes conducting sensitive crime investigations, including child abuse and neglect, and effecting arrests when appropriate. The School Liaison Officer often performs combined interviews with the Department of Social Services when the investigation involves a juvenile victim, so the juvenile does not have to endure two separate interviews.

The various types of violations investigated within the school include, but is not limited to:  theft, disorderly conduct, unauthorized presence on school property, substance abuse, burglary, and bomb threats.  A juvenile court date occurs each month at the Ozaukee Justice Center in Port Washington, and the School Liaison Officer is the Juvenile Court Officer, who represents the City of Mequon for the proceedings.

The School Liaison Officer coordinates job shadowing and ride along programs, to allow the students to have a better understanding of the duties of a police officer.  Homestead High School has a substance abuse intervention program called Mequon Thiensville Intervention Program (MTIP).  The MTIP addresses making appropriate choices, reflecting upon outside influences, and offering a peer-guided support system for students.  Through MTIP, the officer addresses parental concerns and offers educational materials and alternative solutions.  The School Liaison Officer is involved with school and community organizations such as Positive Parent Involvement (PPI),the advisory board for Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug abuse (ATOD), school crisis teams, and the Ozaukee Council alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention consortium.
